When it’s dark and wet outside, Carnival doesn’t stop – in fact, we think it’s when it’s needed most!
We’ve got some great events and workshops coming up and, as usual, you can join us and get involved!
The first is the Tameside Winter Carnival, this year held in Stalybridge on Saturday 16 November. Global Grooves is working closely with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, and the theme for this year’s event is ‘Northern Lights’. Global Grooves artists will be teaming up with Cabasa Carnival Arts, also based at The Vale, to develop new Carnival King and Queen costumes influenced by two Carnival traditions: the English May Queen tradition and the costumed figureheads that lead the Brazilian Samba schools, Porta-Bandeira and mestre-sala. We’re so excited about how these commissions are taking shape, and they will be embellished with the help of three Tameside community groups, Mossley Re:Create, Infinity Initiative CIC and Khush Amdid, who have been working with Global Grooves artists to batik costumes especially for the event.
We’ve also commissioned new work from some of our artists, to further develop their own skills and create beautiful new works for the Carnival – so look out for exciting new puppets on the night! You’ll also see one of our former Future Leaders, Louise Gibbons, working with the Sarah England School of Dance in Stalybridge to create brand new choreography for the event. It’s all happening!
And for Micklehurst and Mossley residents, we’ve got some great events coming up for you, too.
Though Mossley Light Festival won’t be taking place this year, the Micklehurst and Mossley Christmas Lights Switch-Ons will be taking place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 November.
In Micklehurst on Friday 22 November, fire-breathing puppets will be stalking the crowds, whilst Mossley Hollins’ brass band and Father Christmas will also be making an appearance. The fun starts at 6pm on Station Road.
In Mossley on Saturday 23 November, stilt-walking elephants, fairies, snails and robots will be making their way round Top Mossley’s marketplace from 5pm.
