Welcome to The Vale!

Whether you’re a professional Carnival artist looking to develop your practice at our Northern Carnival Centre for Excellence, or a passionate purveyor of the arts in your spare time, The Vale is the perfect place to call home.

Global Grooves, the Carnival arts company, has called The Vale home since 2012, when the organisation moved into part of the building and, two years later, opened a mixed-use studio to artists for rehearsals and making space and to the community for gigs, cinema and other happenings.

Though The Vale quickly became a much loved part of Mossley, it soon became clear that it isn’t ideal for our activities. It’s not fully accessible, and we need more storage space. And, as we’re an ambitious bunch, we want to develop high quality studios and performance space to drive forward our productions and make them the best we can be.

In 2018, we were overjoyed to be awarded £490,000 from Arts Council England to develop the Northern Carnival Centre of Excellence, to take our home to the next level. The Northern Carnival Centre of Excellence will enable us to refurbish, renovate and recreate The Vale to provide top notch facilities for the development of Carnival, so think high quality performance space, purpose-built studios for a wide range of making activities, additional (and waterproof!) storage… With facilities like this in-house, we’ll be able to host Carnival practitioners from around the world as they nurture their own practice, as well as ensure that our own productions and performers have a tip-top home to call their own.

But the community is also integral to Global Grooves, and our work couldn’t flourish without the involvement of the people on our doorstep. We’re busy fundraising so that The Vale can become a fully accessible, multi-purpose arts space for local people, too – the kind of place where people can come to watch cinema, participate in an arts class, drop their kids off to a band rehearsal, or simply call in for a cuppa.

And, once this all goes ahead, we’ll be the only high quality arts centre of its kind in Tameside, and only the second dedicated centre to Carnival in the UK.

As work gets underway, we’re limiting the events and activities that take place here, but keep an eye on News and make you’re signed up to our mailing list for the latest updates.

We regret we are not currently wheelchair or disabled accessible. We can offer some activities in disabled-access venues very close to The Vale in order to be as inclusive as possible. Once The Vale reopens again in 2020, it will be fully accessible.
