Astrid Alben is a poet known for the mesmerising delivery of her jazzy, experimental poems that deal with ancestral ties, solitude, flight, insomnia and the embattled absurdities of daily life: “fresh, unpredictable, deep, playful.” Her poems have been translated into many languages and she has appeared at Literary Festivals throughout Europe.
In this exclusive performance for The Vale Live, Astrid will be reading a selection of poems from her recently published book Plainspeak (Prototype Publishing).
In Plainspeak the poet plays with formal boundaries, linguistic identity and the lyrical poetic voice, writing with rhythmic vitality: “a text-transcending space that is part dance, part art installation, and part space trip. An heir to European experimentalism … Plainspeak is a multi-vocal poetry: unpredictable, elegant and wholly original.’ (Kathryn Maris)
For this performance Astrid also teamed up with Vale regular and guitarist Jon Mambo. They collaborated across the country in isolation to bring you a selection of musically backed poems premiering on The Vale Live. Expect a diverse and innovative approach to modern poetry with jazzy riffs and funky beats.
