Sefo Kanuteh is a virtuosic, soulful and authentic Kora and Balafon player from The Gambia. Having worked closely on major projects with artists such as Baaba Maal and The BKO Quintet, his drive to recreate the warmth of his home community in the UK is shown through his inspiring audience engagement during performances, as well as his various workshops throughout Europe.
Sefo makes all of his instruments himself and travels around the world to introduce his culture. Now, more than ever, he feels it is important to learn how to come together, support each other and to slow down, rather than retreating and letting fear define our actions.
“Our lives are so fast-paced, that often we don’t even know our own neighbours.”
Sefo Kanuteh’s Arts Council England funded tour will perform at twelve UK venues & festivals between 12th June – 7th October 2021. We are delighted to be hosting Sefo, his band, the masterclass participants, as well as a support slot from Global Grooves, at our brand new venue as part of our Northern Carnival Centre of Excellence launch. We can’t wait to fill the space with brilliant sounds and feel-good vibes for this event.
His tour follows the release of two brand new albums: “Audouna” recorded during a holiday to The Gambia in 2020, following a chance reunion with a friend & collaborator dating back twenty years; and “Afou”, recorded in collaboration with UK-based musicians, is predominantly an acoustic album and showcases his instruments in a completely different setting – a stripped back visceral ambience, which takes listeners on a hypnotic journey through Sefo’s music.
Dig out your dancing shoes and join us for an evening of outstanding entertainment.
The event will be hosted in our brand new live performance venue and rehearsal space, part of the Northern Carnival Centre of Excellence, opening in autumn 2021. Featuring a custom designed, flexible PA system, an environmentally conscious stage lighting system, a fully stocked bar and plenty of Carnival colour, the space is accessible and perfect for live performances of all kinds. We can’t wait to welcome you!
