The band are really excited to launch their new project, ‘Siete Rayos’!

Siete Rayos is a new six-piece version of the band, Mojito, with a strong focus on modern Cuban dance music, and with a few traditional gems nestled in the mix. Our inspiration for this project is simply our favourite dance music, from Cuba, of course, son montuno, salsa, and timba.

Mojito Quartet

Mojito has been touring the UK, as a quartet, for the last four years with The Rum Festival, honing our sound, and developing a strong connection between the core musicians; multi-instrumentalist Juan Sanchez (lead vocals, trombone, and trumpet), piano supremo, Andrzej Baranek, bass master, David Tompkins, and percussionist, Christian Weaver. For this project, the core musicians of the Mojito quartet are joined by special guests, Jonny Enright, on trombone, and Jack McCarthey on Timbales, to create a new six-piece band, with a new outlook and fresh sound, Siete Rayos.

Jonny Enright

Halifax born trombonist, Jonny Enright, has performed and recorded with many artists from a variety of styles including: Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Tito Allen, Jimmy Bosch, Jack Costanzo, Joe Bataan, Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers, Kathryn Williams, Peggy Seeger, Lo Fidelity Allstars, Bootsy Collins, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow, Omar.

He composes for and leads his own Latin band, Grupo X, who released their sixth album, ‘Saturday Night’, in June 2021.

Jack McCarthy

Jack is a freelance percussionist and drummer based in Manchester. He currently occupies one of the percussion chairs on The Lion King, UK and Ireland Tour, but also takes time off to tour and record with a range of artists. He spent his formative years studying percussion extensively with master musicians in West Africa and Cuba. From this, as well as his extensive performance experience, he has developed a solid and expressive style on the Timbales that blends a mastery of the traditions, with the more contemporary styles of explosive, modern Cuban dance music. He has performed all over Europe with artists such as, ‘London Elektricity’, and Matthew Halsall. We are delighted to welcome him into this band for this project.

Expect fiery percussion, soaring call and response vocals, big fat brass lines, virtuosic soloing, classic Cuban son, modern timba, and NY/Cuban salsa. This is music primarily for dancing. Dance salsa, timba, cumbia, rumba, conga, in your own style, or however you like, the band makes no distinction, they just aim to fill you with energy and lift you from your seat. Or, if you prefer, sit back and enjoy the intricacies of the music and the dazzling musicianship of the performers.

You’ll need your dancing shoes for this one! We can’t wait to dance the night away with you.

The event will be hosted in our brand new live performance venue and rehearsal space, part of the Northern Carnival Centre of Excellence, opening in autumn 2021. Featuring a custom designed, flexible PA system, an environmentally conscious stage lighting system, a fully stocked bar and plenty of Carnival colour, the space is accessible and perfect for live performances of all kinds. We can’t wait to welcome you!

Please note: This is a 16s and over only event. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult 18+.
