About the Film
To celebrate Carnival weekend in Brazil we wanted to bring a taste of Carnival to the pennine hills.
This work is the fruit of a collaboration between French Samba specialist Jean-Christophe Jacquin, Philippe Nasse (The “Salon de Musique” series manager), singer and percussionist Klaus Blasquiz and sound engineer Bruno Ginstet (who also directed the documentary).
The film explores the incredible and vibrant process of the creation of carnival from the heart of Rios championship samba schools Imperatriz, Mangueira, Portela, and Viradouro.
About our guest speaker
Jean-Christophe Jacquin is recognised today as one of the most accomplished French sambistas. He has studied samba percussion with Nicia Riba d’Avila, the musicologist who initiated the samba movement in France. Director of bateria with the Zum Zum group, as well as art director for the Bate Bombo bateria, he also directed 300 percussionists during the “Latitude Brésil” festival at La Villette, in Paris, commemorating Brazil’s 500 years of existence. Director of the Jussieu University samba school, he also holds workshops at La Cité de la Musique, Paris. Jean-Christophe Jacquin has participated in Rio’s Carnival since 1990, with baterias including Arranco, Portela and Imperatriz Leopoldinense. The latter, unique in Sambodromo’s history, having been triple champion, in 1999, 2000, and 2001 successively.
Jean-Christophe will be joining us all in a live link from Paris to introduce his documentary and give a behind the scenes insight into The Heart of Rio’s Baterias following the film with a live Q&A.
