Handy People!

A brand new eight-week course aimed at giving you the skills you need to begin a hands-on creative career.

*Due to the Government Initiated Lockdown on 4th Jan, Handy People is now postponed*

We hope to return when safe to do so. Please check back for updates.

Please add your name to the waiting list to be the first to hear when we’re open for new applications.

You can do this by filling in the form below, emailing hello@the-vale.co.uk or calling us on 01457 238 089.

What will the sessions cover?

Professional artist and local handy man, Mike Green, will guide you through the basics of working with wood and creative DIY including safety tutorials and repair work. You will gain hands-on skills leading you to upcycle and breathe new life to used and old furniture. We’ll also offer creative confidence builders, one-to-one sessions to support your personal development, and take you through what it means to be self-employed.

The course will run every Wednesday morning for three hours in small groups to allow for social distancing.

When and where will the sessions take place?

An online induction session will take place on 9th December via Zoom

The first practical session will take place on Wednesday 13th January at 10am – 1pm. The course will run every Wednesday for 7 weeks (during term time) with the final session taking place on 3rd March.

We will strive to hold these practical sessions face-to-face with a small number of participants at The Vale in Mossley. The Vale is a Covid-secure community centre and venue in Greater Manchester. Assuming we will re-enter Tier 3, we are allowed to deliver face-to-face sessions under a limited capacity for the following reasons:

  •       for registered childcare, education or training
  •       support groups of up to 15 participants – formally organised groups to provide mutual aid, therapy or any other form of support (not to take place in private dwellings)

This guidance has been lifted from official government guidance on October 21st 2020 which can be found here . The face-to-face elements of the project will be subject to change as government guidelines are updated.

The first session will be delivered remotely via Zoom, you will need access to a computer / tablet. We can support you with some digital access requirements.

You will be asked to wear a face mask (unless you are exempt) and social distancing will be maintained at all times during face-to-face sessions. Please get in touch if you’d like to talk more about how we’re staying Covid Secure.

Can I join?

This course is designed to give you the education and training you need to get into employment and offer support to anyone struggling from the effects of unemployment.

As this is a project Bangdrum has been funded to deliver by the European Social Fund (ESF), participants must be over 16, unemployed and a Greater Manchester resident to participate. We’re particularly interested in hearing from participants who are over 50, retired and economically inactive. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate anyone who is currently on the government furlough scheme, or registered Self-Employed.

The majority of sessions will be delivered in person at our studio at The Vale, Mossley. The number of participants per session is limited to six to allow for social distancing guidelines to be met.

What do I need to participate?

There will be a second round of the course starting in February. Fill in the form below to be added to the waiting list and you’ll be the first to hear when more places become available.

We look forward to meeting you!
