City of God

City of God – Plus Brazilian music experience and live link with Brazil

(Certificate 18, 2002)
To celebrate Carnival week in Brazil we are proud to present the BAFTA award winning Oscar nominated block buster
City of God.
The streets of the world’s most notorious slum, Rio de Janeiro’s City of God, are a place where combat photographers fear to tread, police rarely go and residents are lucky if they live to the age of 20. In the midst of the oppressive crime and violence, a frail and scared young boy will grow up to discover that he can view the harsh realities of his surroundings with an artistic eye. In the face of impossible odds, his brave ambition to become a professional photographer becomes a window into his world and ultimately his way out.

CITY OF GOD UPDATE:

To celebrate CARNIVAL weekend in Brazil, we are pleased to announce that The Vale’s screening of ‘City of God’ will include a live link up with photographer João Paulo Lima in São Paulo AND a Brazilian Carnival music taster session with musical director Eraldo De Sá Marques, also from São Paulo, Brazil.

About João

João has spent most of his life capturing the images of life in São Paulo’s Favelas (slums). From an early age João has been teaching pin hole photography within the favelas to demonstrate to young people the diversity and beauty of the world around them. Having grown up the Favelas himself, João has been teaching young people in his community about the importance of education and showing them there is more to their life than what might be immediately presented. More recently João has traveled internationally exhibiting his recent work as part of the ‘Wembley to Soweto project’ and a host of other high profile events.

About Eraldo

Eraldo’s childhood beginnings within the percussion scene (with Meninos do Morumbi) have provided him with a real love and understanding of the power of the arts to transform lives.  As well as coordinating, administrating, and delivering musical content within Global Grooves and Bangdrum CIC programmes, he has inspired a host of UK tutors with his knowledge and almost serene approach to workshop leading. Eraldo has aided the development of a number of Northwest percussion and dance ensembles.

“City of God” churns with furious energy as it plunges into the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro. Breathtaking and terrifying, urgently involved with its characters, it announces a new director of great gifts and passions: Fernando Meirelles. Remember the name. The film has been compared with Scorsese’s “GoodFellas,” and it deserves the comparison. Scorsese’s film began with a narrator who said that for as long as he could remember he wanted to be a gangster. The narrator of this film seems to have had no other choice.
